Salford Celtic Football Club (10/02/10)
Our Club name is a combination between our area and our people. In AD 70 the Roman General, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, came across a small settlement that is now Manchester, along the important road between Chester and York. Overlooking the confluence of the rivers Irwell and Medlock he saw that it was an excellently defendable position against the native Celtic tribes the BRIGANTES ( Northern Celts or Britons ). Salfords name is a corruption of two ancient words - SAL or SAHL ( from the Latin word SALIX meaning Sallow or Willow ) and FORD ( Germanic for river crossing ) and was probably known to the Roman as SALICIUM. It was for many centuries the only place to cross the river Irwell for many miles in either direction. The Willow tree lined banks of the Irwell separated Salford from Manchester for centuries and extensive stretches of the banks of the river in Salford are still inhabited by the famous plant. The Anglo Saxon chronicles of 932 AD states that Salford was a place of some importance in the old Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria ( Northern England ) and the Salford 100 ( one of the earliest forms of land division in Britain )contained all the land between the river Ribble to the river Mersey. This is one of the reasons why Salford is still named as the Senior City of the famous twin Cities of Manchester and Salford. Therefore our Club takes its name from the oldest recorded civilisation in the area ( the Celts ) and the area in which we play - Salford Sports Village, Littleton Road, Salford, on the banks of the river Irwell.
